Similar in many ways to the common eider and the spectacled eider, this Duck of the Week bedazzles onlookers with color.

King eiders have bright blue heads, a stark yellow face, and striking black and white feathers on their back and tail. Females of the species, affectionately known by some as queen eiders, are a rich brown color with patterned black highlights and a black bill.

Making their home in far northern coastal regions, king eiders commonly spend much of their time in the Arctic, living along the coldest shores of North America, Europe, and Asia.
To see these ducks in the wild, one would need to live in or visit some of the most remote northern places in the world.
I imagine it would be worth the trip.
Next week: soup pants.
