The origins of this domestic duck are unclear. The Ancona was thought to have originally been bred in Britain, but recent evidence shows New York farmer W.J. Wirt was the first to announce it in 1913.

Anconas have a white and black-speckled appearance, though they may also have speckles of blue, chocolate, silver, or lavender. They are foragers and are considered hardy ducks.

They are not officially recognized by the American Poultry Association or similar organizations, but they can be found on many farms. Perhaps it’s only a matter of time before they are included, considering their unique look.
